The invitation

You’ve wanted to play the daf. This is the start.

Not someday. Eight hours, eight Mondays, and you cross into January able to hold a daf, make a clear tone, and keep a rhythm with other people.

Every class is recorded and sent to you the next day with notes, so a busy Monday never sets you back.

By December 21

What you’ll be able to do

01

Hold it right

Posture and the frame in the hand. Hear which sounds come from the skin and which from the rings.

02

The main strokes

Bass, edge, and the shimmer of the rings, adapted for a plain frame drum too. Traditional names included.

03

Four rhythms

A simple 2, a bright 4, a Persian-style 6/8, and Da’em, slow enough to breathe with, then faster.

04

A piece of your own

A short, complete piece you can play start to finish. That is the point of starting now.

Questions

Before you join

Do I need a drum before the first class?

A drum is ideal by week 2. Week 1 is fine if yours is still on the way.

Daf or frame drum?

Either is welcome. Everything is taught for the daf, with the strokes adapted for a plain frame drum.

What time is class where I live?

5:30 PM Pacific · 6:30 PM Mountain · 7:30 PM Central · 8:30 PM Eastern.

What if I miss a Monday?

Each class is recorded and sent the next day with that session’s notes. Recordings and notes are for enrolled students, not for posting.

What should I have ready at home?

A quiet corner, your drum, and a chair without arms, or you can stand. That’s it.

I have a question you haven’t answered.
